In response to my recent posting on Red Dirt Post about Dog Food for thought:
From Jay in Tulsa,
Chuck, hi, what a great story. My guy is the same way. It's like he's never seen dog food (with a little real chicken mixed in)! j.
From Joann in San Rafael, Ca:

Hahaha. Thanks for the laugh, Chuck.  I’ve heard the path to happiness is lowered expectations…J Take care. -- Joanne

From KLT Illinois,

Very funny! You are right…the same thing every day and it’s still the best!

From Barb in Wisconsin:

I love how descriptive this is, I can see just how excited Rickles is behaving.

From JM in Colorado Springs:
My dog Mitch is a dancer too, he has a routine that would be the envy of Fred Astaire.

Then we have a second dog, Sammie, inherited from our daughter Kelly, he's a drummer.  He thumps the washer and dryer and between the two of them, the joint is jumpin.

From daughter number-2:
Your so good at this!  I love this!  Very super duper funny.  Love You,

Response from CT in Illinois about outhouses:

Hi Chuck!

I was laughing out loud at this! It’s so true…whatever we grow up with is what we think is normal…

Thanks for sharing!

Response from Jay Cronley on "Yo Mama Don't Dance," Tulsa World:
great story, thanks for sending it......

Responding to post about Disneyland California:

You struck a cord with us again.  We'll be at Disney World, Florida, the first week of April with our daughter, Kristin; her hubby, Rusty and our six year old grandson, Louis.  We can hardly wait to participate in Louis's excitement and fun on his first visit to Disney World; oh what fun!
More about Disneyland

This is a great piece! I’ve never been to Disneyland, but you have given me a good glimpse inside!

And one more:

My daughter, Lisa, is going to Disneyland for her 40th birthday.   Oh the memories...

From a recent visitor to Memory River Radio:

Someone sent me an email talking about childhood with black and white TV.   That was not MY childhood.   So I sent a kidding comment and Googled a picture of the old Philco Radio we had on the kitchen table when I was a child.  And up came your Philco and your web site.  I have a lot of friends and family who will really enjoy this

THANKS !

CAC, Pearl City, Hi.

This is one of your best to date! I love it! I can totally see Rickles poking around….

Have a great holiday Chuck!

Response to a posting on RDP about my displeasure with cranberries:
From BL in Wisconsin,
Gee Chuck you sure have it in for cranberries.  I love my cranberry, raspberry jello at Thanksgiving and I drink cranberry juice, no sugar added, mixed with water and ice every day, it's refreshing and good for you.

Hope you and all your loved ones had a great turkey day.

Barbara

From Ct in Illinois,

Tell me how you really feel! : )

Hope your Turkey day was great despite the addition of the cranberry sauce, sitting at the table. And hope Rickles got a little treat.

Take care,

Catherine

Response to Delivering Bad News:

From daughter No. 2 in Hawaii:

Daddy!
I happen to like jiffy.  haha my generation must like to do things the easy way.  I do make a mean cornbread though, if I am ever persuaded to do so.  Wish you were here, we are going to have a feast for Kennedy's birthday and it promises to be my best yet.
Love You,

Comments about Last Week's Broadcast of Cruising Down 66:
Hi; tried to listen to the archived show with Windows Media Player, which
works on all my other files, but it did not play your show.  I'm sure it's a
great one, but can't listen on Sunday morning, as I'm in church.  Thanks
anyway.

From David F on radio program:
Hello,

A friend sent me the link.

The music is a little before my time, but I like to hear it sometimes.

Were you in radio?

You mentioned in the Nov 8 show that you thought the 50s and 60s were a bit less s tressful.  I wonder if that would be true for blind people, too.  I know there was no right on red to confuse street crossings.  I had heard somewhere that at that time the employment rate for blind people was at about 50% and the braille literacy rate was higher then.  Off course, I don't know if you are blind yourself.

I absolutely LOVE this site. I am 30 years young and raised by my grandmother & love this music. Great job!

Is there any way you can put up a ticker that lists the songs and the artist that is playing. Like a playlist. I can’t remember the artist to all of the songs or the names of the songs.  Keep up the great site.

Comment on Cruising Down 66 radio program:
Hi Chuck,

I like your new program. I always enjoy listening to the oldies but goodies! You inspired me to want to know the top songs of 1969, specifically September of that year. I discovered "Bad Moon Rising" No. 1 in the UK and "Sugar, Sugar" in the US for the week of Sept 19. It's fun to know what was playing the week of one's birth. I'm trying to decide which one speaks more to the way my life has gone. LOL Would love to hear a show featuring songs of 1969.

Keep up the good work!

Karen in Austin where I'm listening to music instead of editing the magazine! It's your fault! :)

Hi Chuck,

I didn't know JH66 was you. I almost deleted the message but I'm glad I didn't because now I'm being treated to great music and profiles of musicians as I work at the computer.

You just mentioned your piano. I have recently taken up piano lessons and want to purchase a new electronic keyboard. Would you have any suggestions of what brands/features to look for? Obviously I want to get one with great sound and it would be nice to be able to record practice sessions.

Enjoying the music,

Reader commenting on telephone posting:

Hi Chuck,

Your latest Okie Without Borders" message reminded me of a comical moment in my life.  In the mid 60's I was invited to a new neighbors apartment; in her kitchen I noticed the wall phone.  I asked "Where did you get a black phone?"  She looked at me strangely for a moment and said "All phones used to be only black."  Talk about first impressions...I felt really dumb.  But we had a good laugh and she invited me back again.

Take care,

Barbara

Cute piece Chuck! I still love the sound of an old phone.

By the way—thanks for the vote at Writer’s Digest! My blog, www.freelance-zone.com made the top 101 Best Websites for Writers list for 2009. You were part of the reason. I appreciate it!

Hi Chuck, I enjoy your program very much...I am retired living in

we are about the same age, I may be a few years older...I know we grew

the same music...small combo Jazz, but my favorite has to be the big
Bands, especially
Stan Kenton..and the Four Freshmen...June Christy, Nat King Cole, and
Frank Sinatra...

Chuck,
This afternoon during the blizzard I was enjoying your show.  You played a selection by Chet Baker and I wondered if you were aware of his album that was recorded live here in Tulsa at the Nine of Cups restaruant?  You can find details on the TulsaTvMemories.com site.

Repartee on spring break:

Don’t get me started on the overindulged young people that are been created by the overindulged parents! I have a nephew that is 14 and has been handed more gadgets and “stuff” already in his lifetime than I have now! He will fit right in with this poor broke college student who has to go to Cancun for Spring Break. My tears are flowing!

Let’s see, my spring breaks were spent working when I was in college. It was just another week, with the exception of not having to go to class. I didn’t know it was written in the tablets that you had to go on some exotic get-a-way just because it is spring break! I was born into the the wrong set of circumstances! Rats!

Responses to trip to Hawaii:
Hi Chuck, you may wish to stay there for a while it warms up in Okla.  If you can locate that fime cocunut candy try it out.  In the 1960's a lady from the island worked for me in Omaha ne.  Her husband was in the air force.  When she would visit her family she always brought back cocunut candy that was terrific. Try it.

Pass me the Kleenex…you are in Hawaii and I am in Tulsa! L What a wonderful place to be, Hawaii. The North Shore of Oahu is my favorite place on earth, of course I haven’t been to many other places like that, but I dearly love that place listening to the waves continually crash into the rocks and beach. I will get back there someday, yes sir, I will! Enjoy and smash those pesky cockroaches if you can! J

Response to Okie Repartee:
Chuck,
Speaking of the PO, the other day I was across the street visiting with a neighbor.  I saw a piece of paper under the hedge by the porch.  I picked it up and handed it to my neighbor.  She looked at it and handed it back saying "I think this is yours."  Sure enough, it was an important letter, to me, from the USDA with some deadlines which would have been costly to me had I missed them.  Never knew how it got under the hedge across the street as my mail slot is in my door, the mail comes into the house.

We had snacks at my house, veggies and dip, crab dip and crackers, and ice cream! However, the game did not go as we had hoped, so those last few mins brought has pain, but I didn’t have to stay up and celebrate, so I got to bed earlier than planned! Have a super week Chuck!

Response to Okie Repartee about winter in East L A

I moved to Arizona and then California from Pennsylvania, where I had waited
for buses in rain and snow for quite a few years.  Arizona proved to be a
very hot climate to live and work a dog guide in, though I enjoyed the
people I met and found enjoyable work there.

Southern California has a wonderful year round climate but here, there are
earthquakes with the threat always looming of the Big One.

So my conclusion is that short of heaven, for those of us who believe in it,
there is no perfect place to live.  I think this is the way that God keeps
us humble.

Just my thoughts of course.

Sincerely,

Cindy Flerman

Response to Why live here?
Hey Chuck!
Heard about the weather there.  Not to burst your bubble again, but it's supposed to be 77 degrees here today.  We went surfing on Sunday and may go again today.  You should come visit!  And right now, there is some affordable living here because no one can sell their house!  Haha...  Oh, one more thing, almost everyone here (not including us) was happy after the National Championship game in college football.  Well, other than the weather, how is everything going there?  Travis and I would love to come back and visit, but probably won't get to until this summer or next Christmas.  You need to meet Nani too!  She is a sweet little white fluff ball that would love your attention.  Rickles might like her too!  Well, good to hear from you!

Love, one of your favorite nieces,
Kiala

Chuck,
For the first time in my long working life, I am taking a snow day!  Read the paper, did the crosswords, had a big breakfast of pancakes, sausage and eggs, followed by a jigsaw puzzle with my wife.  What a life!  Should have been doing this years ago!

Response to Okie Repartee on teens and history

Response from Okie Repartee on poetry:
Hi Chuck,

I liked the poem better than Obama's speech!

A commentator said that the President's inaugural address was deliberately
written to be lower-key than his campaign speeches to prepare us to make the
necessary sacrifices in the future.

I had expected more of a Kennedy-like inspirational speech.

But I really did like the poem.

Sincerely,

both

From Monica in Tulsa:

You are lactose intolerant!

From David near San Luis Obispo:
I think you need more California ice cream and suspenders!

I think this suggests that you be wary of  wee-people.  And switch to boxers.

Stan

According to Freud, your dream has sexual overtones intertwined with your youth.  Standing in line
to get ice cream or any other thing simply means you were a frustrated child.   Getting hugged by
a small woman is obviously a sign that you need to have an affair, with your wife "catching" you with
another woman.

All in all, a fairly normal dream for someone at your advanced age.

                                        Happy New Year,

Responding to post on Memory River Radio about paper delivery:
If you do contact the paper office, please ask them why I received my newspaper the other day----except it was the same paper I had received the day before.  All of my neighbors received the correct paper, I was the only "lucky" one to get to read the same news on two consecutive days.  You are right----something is amiss!

From Don in San Luis Obispo:
Chuck,

Had a good time with "Okie Pilgrims" and "White Christmas."  Keep it up.   Merry Christmas to all and to all a good '09.

Cousin Don

Hello Chuck.
Tonight was my first time on your web site. I got your site off of a person giving it out on a magazine that's audio on cassette called, "Newsreel."
I enjoyed listening to the o.t.n. three or four I recorded on my Victor reader Stream with its recorder feature.
I am 62, so remember these programs as a child.
I have no idea if you can help me with this, but i will ask it anyway.
I before finding your site tonight spent several hours trying to find o.t.n. programs that were free. Everyone one I tried only ended up wanting to sell me mp3's and so on.
Is there a list or something I am not aware of I can get that will give me places to go to enjoy these programs without trying to sell them to me?
I have one more question, where can I go to get the simplest step by step instructions in how to get podcasting going?
My friend installed what he called a podcast catcher called Jjuice on my computer, but I nor he had any idea how to get them to this catcher, and of course I don't either.
I also enjoy reading what you have written as well.
It must be quite a job keeping up with your site.
Thank you for having these programs to listen at no cost.
By the way, I have been blind for a little more than 50 years now from RP.

Response to Okies eating out:
Chuck,

Yes, it tasted better then, and all for less than $1.  Once after church, I was lucky enough to be invited by your father to go along and enjoy one of those burgers, what a treat.

My friend, Joe Pearson, a high school buddy and plumber from Montebello Senior High School just returned from our 50th high school reunion in Las Vegas.  The class of 58 actually had over 200 old timers to attend the 50th..  Yes even Joe the plumber remembered Rod's, one of his favorite hamburgers.
Cousin Joe.

Response from my own daughter.  Hmm, does she read this stuff?
Eating out!

Really!  That place reminds me of Ron's hamburgers in the farm shopping center.  Dad truly you are hilarious, I love your stories!
Court

Response to My Fall Shorts posting about Oil cos bailing out the auto cos.
Chuck, it's about selling cars, isn't it. How do they ever plan to sell one of those lousy electric or giant cars?

Finally, a response from my very own daughter:
Oh my Goodness Daddy!
That was just so funny, Jules and I both loved your story and Happy Thanksgiving to you too!!!  I miss you very much...
She was responding to my Okie pilgrim posting.

Nice Chuck! I love your website….hope all is well with you and the pup!

Catherine

Hi Chuck,

I just spent some pleasurable moments on your website.  The music was great and I really enjoyed reading your journal.  Having grown up in Pico Rivera in the fifties, I share many common childhood experiences (lacking the "Okie"
background, however.)

Tim preaches tomorrow and is somewhat stressed at the moment.  I am waiting for the clock to move forward a bit more so I can go to bed.  We set the clocks back right after dinner and the evening seems very long.  Your website really helped to make the evening more pleasant.

We hope you both and all of your loved ones are doing well.
Love,
Judi

In response to RRJC program about Okies and what they missed not migrating to California:
Good evening,

Sure did enjoy your program today.  Things we missed by not moving to California----I don't believe you mentioned some of the UNnatural phenomena of California---such as Brittany Spears.

Have you had a chance to view the program "Black Blizzard" on the History Channel?  It is two hours of really great pictures and information about the dust bowl days and Oklahoma is, naturally enough, a major part of the show.  Worth watching.

Bob Mitten

Also, there was this:

Just heard you talking about the big ’51 earthquake, I too remember the power of it; we were living in Taft, CA at the time it hit. I helped shovel the glass from the aisles of the supermarket where may father worked…what a mess.

Enjoy your show,

Danny Dunagan

Tulsa, OK

PS: You talk about living in East LA, we also lived in Compton during part WW 2, attended kindergarten there, another place of many California memories.
